Karolyn Pho Fall 2014 Backstage

Dear Kaitlyn,

The Spring 2015 collections were great (plum lips! creative braids!) but fall is in the air here, so I’m sharing one of my favorite Fall 2014 beauty trends. Metallic shadow with emphasis on the lower lash line was popular on the runway, although I would definitely want some Skyn Iceland Eye Gels on hand. I got a few samples at a party earlier this year and absolutely love them. They can be worn even if you’re wearing foundation.

I also like Fall 2014’s clean, no makeup look. Keeping the skin simple always looks great. I’m not planning on giving up my red lipstick, but I’d like to incorporate a neutral lipstick, too. Just need to find the right one for my skin tone!

Selfie! What are your favorite fall beauty trends? I’m also a fan of the 60s-inspired cat eye and sleek, volumized hair this fall.

GEORGINE Spring 2015

GEORGINE is a fairly new designer at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and showed at MBFW for the first time at Fall 2014. I was a fan of high-glam-yet-totally-wearable Fall 2014 collection, and Spring 2015 did not disappoint. Spring 2015 was majorly glamorous and done in a great color story– gold, mint, orange and some great neutrals.

Zang Toi Fall 2014

Zang Toi Fall 2014 | New York Fashion Week | Delayed Missives lifestyle blog

Without doubt, Zang Toi is my favorite show of the season. The one show that thrills me more than any other — that makes me think about why I love runway photography — is always Zang Toi. There’s a magical quality to a Zang Toi show. The models walk sedately and confidently. They don’t rush, they’re not in a hurry. You will wait for them. And the clothes— the movement of a skirt or the shine of an embellishment is enough to stop the heart. You know the feeling when you get it. There’s a collective sigh in the air, a shared feeling of appreciation for being able to take part in something so beautiful.

Leanne Marshall Fall 2014

Leanne Marshall Fall 2014 | New York Fashion Week | Delayed Missives lifestyle blog

Leanne Marshall is my all-time favorite Project Runway designer. She’s best known for her bridal collections, but her signature floaty and feminine  aesthetic is unmistakable in every collection. The Fall 2014 collection is very soft, done mostly in grey and blush tones.

Practically every piece is breathtaking. There are gorgeous flow and movement to every gown, but my favorite looks of the season are taken from the shorter cocktail looks. I loved the soft, sweatshirt-like material combined with what (to my eye) appeared to be sheer organza.

Yuna Yang Fall 2014

Yuna Yang typically shows soft, feminine pieces that are elegant and have movement with a bit of swing. This season’s collection was more eclectic than those of seasons past– feminine lace and appliqué were juxtaposed with sportier silhouettes. The standout pieces were ones that beautifully blended sportswear and feminine chic. Much of the collection was done in neutrals, but I did spot a few looks in ocean blue as well as some colorful neon accents.

Katya Leonovich Fall 2014

Black Dress with Silver Stars Katya Leonovich Fall 2014 | New York Fashion Week

In a departure from her usual mix of daywear and eveningwear, Katya Leonovich Fall 2014 consisted almost entirely of cocktail dresses and creative outerwear. In some ways, the collection was also sportier than in past seasons. I got the impression that the mood was very high-end après-ski, or maybe mountain resort vacation. Volume (some thankfully with a defined waist) and fabrics with metallic sheen lent a futuristic feel. I’ve been noting an outer space trend for fall, expressed here in the use of small silver stars sprinkled through the collection.

Karolyn Pho Fall 2014

Karolyn Pho Fall 2014 is big on style but remains remarkably low-maintenance and no-fuss. Before the show, I went backstage and spoke with designer Karolyn Pho. She told me that this season is about the melding of two concepts: “the idea of something that is so ancient… and modern, futuristic, unknown.” To express this, she created silhouettes in unexpected fabrics– reflected most in the softly draped leather pieces and loose-fitting gold lamé dresses. I also spotted knit, satin, silk and silk organza in the collection.
